A firefighter with a passion for innovation developed a solution that will revolutionize how households use open fires

In Ylivieski, combustion products are being developed that improve combustion and reduce particulate emissions from wood burning. The LumoX products were inspired by Ylivieski firefighter Pasi Sillanpää, who aimed to combine safety, efficiency, and savings for more environmentally friendly combustion. The idea originated in a firefighter training tank, where live fire revealed its secrets. Pasi realized how air needed to be directed to achieve complete combustion.

“In a firefighter training tank, surrounded by live fire, I came very close to seeing and understanding how fire behaves. This experience sparked an idea: could the efficiency and safety of combustion products be improved in a way that also saves fuel and natural resources?” Sillanpää explains.

The combustion expert’s development work began with wood pellets.

Innovative products were born from a need when wood pellets were booming 20 years ago. Store shelves were filled with special pellet baskets and boxes designed for wood stoves. However, I was not satisfied with the solutions available on the market, so I decided to develop a product myself,” Sillanpää recalls.

My career as a firefighter helped me a great deal, as my work allowed me to get as close as possible to fire and observe how it behaves. I saw how combustion gases ignite, how hot flames can actually get, and what happens inside the burning material.”

It got me thinking—how could combustion gases be made to burn efficiently in a wood stove too? How could all the potential heat energy available in combustible materials be utilized? I wanted to see the same phenomenon in my fireplace that I had observed during my work in a firefighter training tank.

These reflections and years of development resulted in the LumoX product range. The range includes products for the efficient use of wood and wood pellets in combustion products. The patented combustion technology developed by Pasi directs preheated combustion air over the combustion process, improving the combustion efficiency of combustion gases and ensuring cleaner combustion. The device is used daily, and I am very satisfied with it. Previously, I would fill the firebox completely, but now with LumoX, I only need to fill it halfway, and with smaller wood. There is a clear difference in wood consumption compared to before; I use less, and the burn time is significantly longer. The surface temperature of the fireplace may not be quite as hot as before, but the heat is evenly distributed. At its best, I have achieved burn times of three or even four hours, with only a little over half a firebox full of wood. It also extends the ember burn nicely when needed.
